Anonymous asked: when did you start running? what did you do to start?

All throughout college I worked at a restaurant that was next to the Rock ‘n Roll AZ marathon and half.  I would always be bartending when tons of runners would come in around 11am or noon to eat.  So, in October 2010, I remembered that the marathon and half would be in town mid January 2011 again and I decided I wanted to do it.  So I guess that is when I started.  What did I do?  Well, when I started, I couldn’t even run 2 miles without slowing down to walk.  I had about 12 weeks to train up so a friend and I would go running like 2 or 3 times a week, each time trying to push ourselves farther.  I don’t have any special tips;  I just made myself get up and do it because I really wanted to finish the half marathon.

However, after I finished the AZ half, I looked more into ‘proper’, structured training and came across the Hal Higdon method, which is kind of similar to what I did on my own.  Also, I have since discovered the Couch 2 5k program, which would have been helpful when I first started.
